Job Title: Database Architect

FLSA Status: Salaried Exempt                                 

Position Summary: The Database Architect at New Home Co. is a critical Engineering team member responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining the company's data infrastructure. This role involves creating and optimizing database systems to support business operations, analytics, and reporting needs. The Database Architect will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to ensure data integrity, availability, and performance, contributing to the organization's goal of delivering robust and scalable solutions for a rapidly growing business.

Key Responsibilities:
1. Data Architecture and Modeling:

  • Database Design:
    • Design logical and physical data models to support new and existing applications.
    • Develop and maintain data architecture diagrams and documentation.
  • Data Standards and Governance:
    • Establish and enforce database development standards, guidelines, and best practices.
    • Ensure data consistency, integrity, and security across all database systems.
2. Data Warehouse Development:
  • Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW):
    • Lead the design and implementation of the Enterprise Data Warehouse using Kimball methodology.
    • Develop star and snowflake schemas, dimension and fact tables, and manage slowly changing dimensions.
  • Integration of Data Sources:
    • Integrate data from various operational systems such as NewStar, InformXL, Dynamics 365, and third-party systems.
3. ETL Development and Integration:
  • ETL Processes:
    • Develop, maintain, and optimize ETL processes using SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS) and Azure Data Factory.
    • Implement data ingestion from diverse sources, including flat files, relational databases, cloud databases, and APIs.
  • Data Transformation:
    • Ensure data is accurately transformed, cleansed, and loaded into target systems.
4. Business Intelligence and Reporting:
  • Reporting Solutions:
    • Develop and maintain reporting databases and infrastructure to support business intelligence initiatives.
    • Using Power BI, SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS), and other reporting tools, create interactive dashboards and reports.
  • Analytics Support:
    • Perform data analysis to identify trends, insights, and patterns.
    • Collaborate with business users to understand reporting needs and deliver solutions that support decision-making.
5. Database Administration:
  • Performance Monitoring and Tuning:
    • Monitor database performance and optimize for speed and efficiency.
    • Implement indexing strategies and query optimization techniques.
  • Backup and Recovery:
    • Develop and manage backup and recovery plans to ensure data availability and integrity.
    • Implement disaster recovery strategies.
  • Security and Compliance:
    • Manage database security, including user access controls and data encryption.
    • Ensure compliance with legal requirements, internal policies, and industry standards.
6. Collaboration and Stakeholder Management:
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration:
    • Work closely with software developers, data analysts, and business stakeholders to gather requirements and translate them into technical solutions.
    • Provide technical guidance and support to team members.
  • Project Management:
    • Participate in project planning, estimation, and execution.
    • Ensure timely delivery of database components within project timelines.
7. Cloud Integration:
  • Azure Cloud Services:
    • Utilize Azure SQL Database and other Azure services for cloud-based data solutions.
    • Implement DevOps CI/CD pipelines for database deployments.
  • Cloud Migration:
    • Assist in migrating on-premises databases to cloud platforms as needed.

Qualifications:
Education:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or a related field.
  • Master’s degree is preferred.
Experience:
  • Minimum of 8 years of experience in database design, development, and administration.
  • Extensive experience with Microsoft SQL Server (previous and current versions and editions).
  • Proven experience in designing and implementing data warehouses and BI solutions.
  • Experience with Azure cloud services and migrating databases to cloud platforms.
  • Experience in the real estate or homebuilding industry is a plus.
Technical Skills:
  • Database Technologies:
    • Expertise in MS SQL Server, including T-SQL programming, stored procedures, functions, triggers, and views.
    • Proficiency with SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS), SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS), and SQL Server Analysis Services (SSAS).
  • Business Intelligence Tools:
    • Proficient in Power BI, including Power Query, M language, and DAX.
    • Experience with data visualization and creating interactive dashboards.
  • Data Modeling:
    • Strong understanding of data warehouse methodologies, particularly Kimball.
    • Experience with star and snowflake schemas, dimensional modeling, and data marts.
  • Cloud Services:
    • Familiarity with Azure SQL Database, Azure Data Factory, and DevOps CI/CD.
    • Experience with cloud-based data solutions and services.
  • Programming Languages:
    • Knowledge of SQL, Java, C#, and scripting languages.
    • Familiarity with .NET framework and related technologies.

Base Salary: The expected base salary range for this position is between $150,000 to $165,000 per year, depending on experience and skillset. Base Salary is paid bi-weekly, every other Friday. Additionally, this position is eligible for an annual bonus based on divisional and individual performance.
